Posted Date: 11/11/25 (11:30 PM)

VeteransSherwood Elementary School proudly hosted a heartwarming Veterans Day celebration that brought together students, staff, and local American Legion members for a memorable morning of learning and gratitude.

As the veterans arrived at the school, students lined the hallways to greet them with smiles, handshakes, and heartfelt thanks for their service. Patriotic music filled the building, creating an atmosphere of pride and appreciation as the honored guests made their way through the school.

"I am proud of them," said 99-year-old David Palmer, a U.S. Army World War II Veteran of the students. "They should be proud of themselves. They should respect the flag, the country, and their adults."

Palmer served in the 71st Cavalry Mechanized Reconnaissance Unit under General George S. Patton.

The highlight of the morning came when fifth-grade students had the opportunity to participate in a special question-and-answer session with the visiting servicemen, who represented various branches of the U.S. military. The veterans shared stories from their experiences, reflected on the meaning of service, and offered valuable lessons about courage, teamwork, and sacrifice.

Teachers and administrators praised the event for its tremendous educational value, noting that it gave students a meaningful perspective on the importance of honoring those who protect our freedom. Through this interactive experience, students not only learned about history but also about the character, discipline, and dedication that define America’s heroes.

Sherwood Elementary extends its deepest gratitude to the veterans for sharing their time and experiences and for their continued service to the community.
