Students from Islip High School’s Keep Islip Clean club participated in their annual Pond Day at Seatuck Environmental Center. Their mission was to continue the never-ending removal of an invasive plant species (the yellow flag iris) that clogs waterways and crowds out native plants.

Students wore waders, used saws-all tools to cut out invasive plants, and hauled more than a ton of plants from the water. Islip High School students’ continuing relationship with Seatuck allows them to volunteer their time towards important projects in environmental stewardship and habitat restoration.

Eight students from Islip High School’s Keep Islip Clean club were also recognized for their leadership as KIC Junior Commissioners at Town Hall West. Four seniors were honored for their years of service and volunteerism, while four underclassmen were inducted into the KIC Junior Commissioner program and will serve as Township and high school club leaders for the 2026-27 school year.

Honored seniors were Emerson Concannon, Jennifer Kornahrens, Katerina Mennecke, and Wesley Plotke. Newly inducted IHS Junior Commissioners returning next year include Jocelyn Covelli, Sharika Karmakar, Madison Nar, and Rosselin Saravia.
