A Message from the Principal:

Dear Islip High School Students and Parents,

At Islip High School, we are excited about the possibilities for students that this 2023-2024 school year offers. Our focus at the High School will continue to be on student learning and specifically, student engagement. Together with faculty and staff, we will encourage students to challenge themselves intellectually, to broaden their academic interests, and to work on becoming the best version of themselves. We hope that students will take advantage of the co-curricular activities, clubs, and leadership opportunities available to them. We look forward to including families in our learning community through a variety of events, including Meet the Teacher night, Curriculum Night, College Planning Workshop for Junior Parents, our evening College Fair, and "Parent University" discussions on October 25th, February 1st, and March 7th. We hope to hear from you and see you in person soon.

Islip’s First Choose to Include Day Brings Awareness to Disabilities

Islip High School hosted the school’s first Choose to Include day on April 18, held in conjunction with Autism Awareness Month and the Special Olympics. Choose to Include is a Special Olympics movement that fosters awareness of differences and celebrates inclusivity through sports and beyond; Islip High School now has both Unified bowling and Unified basketball teams.

Islip’s Choose to Include fair, held in the student lounge and organized by teacher Melissa Horn and her functional academics students, brought awareness to a multitude of disabilities. Students and staff participated in challenges and simulations of these disabilities while attempting to complete everyday tasks.

The event also included a fundraiser to support a scholarship for a special needs student in honor of one of Horn’s students who passed away this school year.

Islip HS Inducts 123 Students to Six Honor Societies

Islip High School proudly inducted 123 students across six societies at this year’s honor society induction ceremony, held on April 17 in the school auditorium. Exceptional scholars took the pledge to join the English Honor Society, Math Honor Society, National Honor Society, World Language Honor Society, and, for the first time, the Art Honor Society and Tri-M Honor Society.

After a wonderful performance from the high school’s jazz band, Class of 2024 valedictorian Jaci Narducci and salutatorian Erica DeLapi led the Pledge of Allegiance, and Principal Dr. Lara Gonzalez welcomed the evening’s attendees. Dr. Michael Giacchetto, the district’s assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, presented the keynote address.

“This was a great night to honor the scholarship, leadership, grit and hard work of so many of our students,” National Honor Society adviser Kerri Schmalacker said.

“It was a wonderful celebration of academic excellence and dedication,” World Language Honor Society adviser Megan Schierhorst said.

Seven Young Islip Leaders Chosen for Boys’ State and Empire Girls State Programs

Four young leaders from Islip High School were chosen by Islip American Legion Rusy-Bohm Post 411 to attend the summer 2024 American Legion Boys’ State and American Legion Auxiliary Empire Girls State programs, with three additional students selected as alternates. American Legion representatives visited the high school on April 11 to congratulate these young men and women, who were selected due to their demonstration of personal character and patriotism.

John Oggeri and Djimon Senior were chosen as primary delegates for Boys’ State, with Mason Nasta selected as an alternate.

Elizabeth Ford and Kathryn Quinn were chosen as citizens for Empire Girls State, with Aliannah Madriz and Melanie Marroquin selected as alternates.

Islip Senior Skylar Greene Pursues Acting Career

This past January and February, Islip High School senior Skylar Greene worked as an actor in the adult ensemble of “Fiddler on the Roof” at the regional Gateway Playhouse in Bellport, performing alongside many seasoned actors who have appeared on Broadway, in national tours and notable regional theaters around the country.

Greene, who has been performing since she was 5 years old, will be attending the Institute for American Musical Theatre in New York City this summer to further her career as an actor.
