Students Across Islip Kick Off “Start With Hello Week”
Students across the Islip School District launched “Start With Hello Week” today by filling hallways with tie-dye and bright colors, a visible reminder of the district’s commitment to kindness, connection, and inclusion. The kids in this featured photo are from Sherwood Elementary School.
The national initiative encourages students to look out for peers who may feel isolated, take the first step to say hello, and build a stronger sense of belonging in their school communities. Throughout the week, schools will host activities that promote empathy and connection, including classroom discussions on inclusive language and simple daily challenges that encourage greetings, positive notes, and acts of kindness.
District educators say the colorful kickoff is more than a dress-up day; it’s a conversation starter. By pairing a fun visual theme with structured classroom lessons and student-led activities, the program helps students recognize signs of loneliness, practice reaching out to others, and normalize everyday gestures that make school feel welcoming for everyone.
The district’s participation underscores an ongoing focus on social-emotional learning and supportive school culture. “Start With Hello Week” aligns with efforts across Islip to foster empathy, elevate student voice, and ensure that every learner feels seen and valued.
