Josh Alarcon Named QuestBridge Scholar, Headed to Yale University
Islip High School is proud to announce that senior Josh Alarcon has been awarded the prestigious QuestBridge National College Match Scholarship and will attend Yale University this fall.
Before discovering QuestBridge, Josh planned to apply to several colleges through the Common Application and rely on scholarships to help manage the cost of attendance. Even so, he anticipated graduating with significant tuition-related debt. After learning about QuestBridge during his freshman year, Josh realized that new opportunities were within reach — and that cost might not have to be the deciding factor in his college journey.
QuestBridge’s National College Match offers high-achieving students binding admission and a full four-year scholarship to one of its 55 partner institutions. Through the Match process, students can rank up to 15 colleges. Being selected as a Match Scholar means Josh will be able to pursue his academic passions without the financial burden that often accompanies higher education.
Yale University, one of QuestBridge’s college partners, was among the schools Josh ranked on his Match application.
“What drove me to apply to Yale was not the prestige the name holds or its campus, as beautiful as it is, but its stellar academics,” Josh shared. “Yale prides itself on letting students take classes that fit their interests, no matter what major they intend to pursue.”
At Yale, Josh plans to major in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science while also incorporating coursework in music. During his time at Islip High School, he has demonstrated a deep interest in understanding how computers work and the wide-ranging applications of technology. He has served as president of the PC Builder Club, the Math Club, and the Coding Club.
Beyond technology, Josh has a strong appreciation for music, enjoying an eclectic mix that includes Reggaeton, Hip Hop, and Drum & Bass.
School counselor Mr. Michael Jargo praised Josh’s character and leadership. “Josh is always eager to lend a helping hand to his peers. His leadership skills and passion for technology inspire those around him and create an environment where others feel encouraged to learn and grow.”
Assistant Principal Ms. Lisa Ward added, “We are so very proud of Josh. His hard work and dedication at the high school level are indicative of all he will accomplish at Yale. His grit and determination in pursuing one of the most prestigious scholarships are impressive. We wish him the best and know he will be successful. Keep smiling, Josh!”
Principal Dr. Lara Gonzalez echoed that sentiment. “Josh is humble and brilliant. He will represent the Islip community so well at Yale — we could not be more proud of his accomplishments.”
With his talent, determination, and heart for service, Josh’s future is undoubtedly bright.
