Sherwood Fourth Grader’s Persuasive Letter Sparks Community Buzz and Real-World Impact

Sherwood WritingA fourth-grade writing assignment at Sherwood Elementary has turned into a community-wide conversation, thanks to the creativity and persuasive voice of 10-year-old Charlotte Scibelli.

As part of the fourth-grade curriculum, students explore argument writing, building on foundational persuasive techniques introduced in earlier grades. At Sherwood, that instruction has clearly taken hold. Charlotte’s letter, advocating for a Slurpee machine at a local favorite, Maple Street Deli, formerly known as Kleibers Country Store, is a standout example of how strong writing skills can translate into real-world impact.

In her thoughtfully structured and enthusiastic letter, Charlotte makes a compelling case directly to the deli’s owner, outlining multiple reasons why a Slurpee machine would benefit both kids and the business. From increasing after-school traffic to offering a safe alternative for kids who might otherwise bike to busier locations, her argument is layered with logic, audience awareness, and even business insight. She also suggests practical placement for the machine and pricing considerations, showing a level of detail and thoughtfulness well beyond her years.

Charlotte didn’t stop at writing. She took her argument a step further by organizing a petition that collected more than 50 signatures in support of her idea. The list, as humorously noted on the deli's social media account, included a mix of recognizable community members and even a fictional guest.

The deli embraced the moment, sharing Charlotte’s letter and petition on its social media channels and inviting the community to share feedback. The response was overwhelming. The post generated more than 430 likes and over 100 comments, all in support of the idea.

“Recently we received a petition from a very good customer,” the post read. “Ten-year-old Charlotte Scibelli took it upon herself to gather 50 signatures in favor of us getting a Slurpee machine… Please comment here if you think Maple Street Deli should get a Slurpee machine…”

What began as a classroom inspiration has quickly evolved into a community movement, showcasing not only Charlotte’s impressive writing ability but also the power of authentic, real-world learning.

Sherwood Elementary students have worked hard on developing their writing skills, and Charlotte’s effort is a clear reflection of that commitment. Her ability to craft a persuasive argument, understand her audience, and take initiative demonstrates exactly what strong instruction and student engagement can produce.
