Islip Eighth Graders Explore History, Government and Science on Washington, D.C. Trip

Islip Middle School eighth-grade students recently embarked on an unforgettable three-day trip to Washington, D.C., filled with educational experiences, historical landmarks and memorable moments with classmates and staff.
The trip gave students the opportunity to connect classroom learning with real-world experiences while exploring some of the nation’s most iconic sites.
The 8th-grade trip was organized by Mrs. Cabanas, a social studies teacher at IMS.
On the first day, students visited Arlington National Cemetery, where they reflected on the sacrifices of America’s service members. The group also toured several national monuments and memorials, including the Washington Monument, World War II Memorial, Lincoln Memorial and Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Students capped off the evening with team-building fun at Dave & Buster's.
Day two focused on American government, history and culture. Students toured the United States Capitol and explored exhibits at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History and National Museum of Natural History. The group also visited the National Archives Building, where students viewed the original Declaration of Independence and U.S. Constitution. The evening concluded with dinner and entertainment at Medieval Times Dinner & Tournament.
On the final day, students visited the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, home to historic aviation and space exploration exhibits, before stopping at University of Pennsylvania for a college visit.
The trip provided students with a deeper appreciation for American history, government, science and higher education, while also creating lasting memories with their classmates and teachers.
