For National Bullying Prevention Month in October, Islip Middle School embraced the theme “Making Good Choices,” empowering students to make thoughtful decisions in and out of the classroom. In conjunction with the monthlong event, the school celebrated Red Ribbon Week from Oct. 21-25, emphasizing the importance of living a healthy, drug-free lifestyle. Each day of the week, students received positive messages focused on valuing their health, community, and future. A highlight of the week was a scavenger hunt, where students solved riddles to find red ribbons, leading them to various support staff who rewarded them with small prizes.
“This activity not only made the week fun, but also reinforced the importance of connecting with the support available within our school,” school social worker Jennifer Francis said.
To further engage students, the middle school hosted a Spirit Week with the theme “Life is a Movie, Film Drug Free,” encouraging everyone to participate and showcase their commitment to healthy choices. During the last week of October, the school welcomed an outreach educator from Cohen Children’s Medical Center, who provided valuable presentations on bullying prevention for all students, and a focused session on drug awareness and prevention for eighth graders.
“At Islip Middle School, we’ve dedicated ourselves to raising awareness about bullying while promoting kindness, acceptance, and inclusion throughout our community,” Francis said. “We hope to continue fostering a supportive environment where kindness and healthy choices thrive.”
