Superintendent Search

At their meeting on Tuesday, October 13th, the Board of Education accepted the resignation of Superintendent Ellen Semel for the purpose of retirement, effective June 30, 2021.

The Board has now begun the important task of selecting the District's next superintendent of schools, a charge they take very seriously. The District has partnered with Eastern Suffolk BOCES to guide them through a comprehensive search process. It is the Board of Education's hope that this process will be a collaborative one that provides stakeholders direct opportunities to share suggestions about the future of the Islip School District. This page will provide you with information and updates as this process unfolds.

As a first step in the engagement process, Dr. Julie Lutz from ESBOCES will host a virtual Community Webinar at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 2, 2020 to discuss the characteristics and qualities collectively sought in our next leader. The link for this webinar is below for you.

All members of the Islip community are also encouraged to provide input by completing the online survey linked below. Should you be unable to complete the survey online, paper copies are available during regular business hours at the Islip Administration Building, located at 215 Main Street, Islip, and in the reception area of each school building. This survey will be open through Friday, December 11, 2020.

Update on Superintendent’s Search – January 2021
The Islip School District thanks the community for its input to date and participation in the superintendent search webinar and community survey. The input you provided was invaluable and has helped us to finalize many of the characteristics we collectively desire in the district’s next superintendent of schools. With the help of BOCES, the Board of Education has identified a number of qualified candidates and will be interviewing those individuals in the coming weeks. Please be assured that the Board of Education takes this responsibility very seriously and know that we are working diligently to select a leader who is best suited to guide our schools for the long-term.
