Islip High School’s Super Vocal Revolution vocal jazz ensemble earned gold at the NYSSMA Majors Festival on May 21. Islip’s singers – Parker Barry, Lucas Bohr, Jessica Cruz, Skylar Greene, Rebecca Leo, Leela Lopez, Michelle Quinteros, Daniel Rubinson and Dan Turk – won the highest award possible at the most challenging level. Dr. Rich Harris played piano and conducted the group, while music teachers Zach Butterfield and Steve Campanella provided back up on bass and drums. Super Vocal Revolution performed again that evening in the school auditorium as part of the district’s Festival of the Arts program.

“I am incredibly proud of these students who made the commitment to prepare for this challenge, and especially to Dr. Harris for seeing the potential in this group and getting them ready, as very few, if any, vocal jazz groups are assessed in New York State,” Director of Fine and Performing Arts Michael Hershkowitz said.
